My first five minutes experience with this was a combination of laughing and confusion. The controls are a bit all over the keyboard (I mean, who the heck thought Escape would be a good back key in the journal?! It’s way to far away when you’re rushing and the game doesn’t pause…) and the camera angle is funky to start with… but after smashing some zombie’s heads in I got pretty used to it and set about all the fun little things to do when you first start a game. I still felt like the starting area seemed a little bit void of content, lots of space but not much to loot; but after a quick scout some resources popped up and new weapons and I was away and racing. Was having fun 5 minutes in… or was it 10 minutes? I can’t remember, I lost track of time probably because I was having fun!
I mean it has it’s problems and stuff (zombies clip through doors and walls sometimes…) but don’t get me wrong, its an awesome game and you should totally grab it while it’s on sale. It took me about an hour to really get used to it but it’s well worth the time.
The game seems to have a very loose story, maybe because they want you to change it as you go. Me? I’ve only gotten 2 hours and 4 deaths (of the ‘main’ character) in but so far so good. Controls are a little wonky, it feels very much more like it was designed for a console than a PC but hey, even if it is a port it’s running reasonably smoothly, just the inputs feel a bit off at times. One other issue? No save points. Choices seem to be locked to that save and you can’t go back when you die or mess up (not good for me, who tries all the things and then reverts to a save to re-choose the best choice)
But that’s cool, again the game its pretty fun. If you like zombie survival games, you’ve probably played DayZ right? Yeah, well State of Decay is like your single player version of DayZ… a little bit dumbed down it would seem though. It coulda done with a little more polish game wise and maybe some more depth with the ‘Ultra graphics’ however.
This year, we’ve seen a lot of bad zombie games. Mostly DayZ try hards like that failure The WarZ, which stole people’s money and then silenced them and also spent it’s first few weeks trying to pretend it WAS the full version of DayZ. Well that didn’t go down well for it, it’s now got a 20 metacritic score (still to high!) and has been renamed to Infestation: Survivor Stories. TL;DR? Don’t fucking buy it!
Now, sure, I don’t write amazing reviews (this must be my first or second one!) but I’m just trying to give it to you like I’d tell my friend - and that’s that you should buy it. It’s fun and I’m already eyeing the DLC which makes the game ‘infinite’ instead of just the campaign story, but that’ll need to wait until I’ve finished the story.
So far, so fun. I think there’ll be at least 30-40 hours gameplay in this before that DLC will be purchased…
So yeah, grab State of Decay on Steam while it’s on sale too. Half price is worth it and I think anyone who likes the Zombie Survival Genre will find this a pleasant surprise!
I guess I’ll write more stuff like this in the future too.
